Shillong: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) launched a scathing attack on the newly formed “One North East” regional political front, alleging that it is a carefully crafted BJP-RSS strategy to prevent anti-BJP votes in the Northeast from consolidating behind the Congress.

The front was formally launched last month in New Delhi by Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K Sangma, Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, former Nagaland minister and BJP national spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon, and People’s Party of Assam founder Daniel Langthasa.

Dismissing the front as a “BJP basket”, MPCC president Vincent H Pala claimed that the saffron party is fully aware that indigenous tribal communities across the Northeast have historically rejected it. “The BJP knows people here don’t accept them directly, so they have created another basket. Anyone who is anti-BJP will be diverted into this basket instead of coming to the Congress,” Pala alleged.

He went on to assert that he had personally learned of the plan from senior BJP-RSS functionaries and predicted that the front would openly support or align with the BJP after the next round of elections. “Its founders are all old friends and former associates of the BJP. Mark my words – post-election, they will merge or work with the BJP,” the Congress leader said.

Warning the people of the region against what he called a “sinister design”, Pala urged voters to see through the façade. “This is not a genuine regional front for indigenous rights. It is simply another route to bring the BJP’s agenda into the Northeast,” he added.

The “One North East” front has positioned itself as a platform to champion the concerns of indigenous communities across the eight northeastern states.
