Meghalaya: FKJGP Calls for JHADC Members’ Resignation Over Lapangap Issue

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has issued a strong demand for the resignation of all 30 members of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), citing their failure to address the ongoing challenges faced by residents of Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya.

Nangkhrawbor Rani, the general secretary of FKJGP’s West Jaintia Hills unit, expressed deep frustration over the JHADC’s apparent disregard for the villagers’ plight. He noted that despite the escalating tensions in Lapangap, no JHADC member has visited the village to evaluate the situation or engage with affected residents.

During a visit to Lapangap on Wednesday to support Pnar farmers resuming their paddy harvest, Rani criticised the Council’s inaction as a significant lapse in governance. “If the MDCs are unable to address this issue, they should step down immediately,” he stated firmly.

Rani praised the resilience of Lapangap’s farmers, who have continued their agricultural work despite ongoing uncertainties, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining peace. He emphasised that the JHADC’s silence has only intensified feelings of abandonment among the villagers.

The FKJGP reaffirmed its solidarity with the farmers and called on the JHADC to take urgent action to prevent further escalation. The organisation stressed that the Council’s core responsibility is to protect the rights and welfare of its constituents, a duty it has failed to uphold in Lapangap’s case.
