The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fiercely criticised the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), the youth wing of the National People’s Party (NPP), for condemning a student who raised concerns about the Tura Medical College project.

Labelling the NPYF’s actions as political intimidation, the TMC accused the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, of stifling dissent and dodging accountability.

The TMC argued that the student’s questioning of the government’s controversial Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for the medical college was an act of civic engagement, not an affront to authority.

However, instead of addressing the legitimate concerns about the nearly completed, publicly funded project, the MDA government allegedly used its youth wing to launch a personal attack on the student.

The TMC described this as a “shameful tactic” to silence young voices and mask the government’s lack of transparency.

“This episode reveals the MDA government’s intolerance for scrutiny,” the TMC declared. “Rather than answering valid questions, they resort to bullying through their political proxies. This is not leadership—it’s an attempt to suppress free speech. The NPP and NPYF must apologise to the student and the people of Meghalaya for this undemocratic behaviour.”

The TMC reiterated its call for the Tura Medical College to be fully state-run, rejecting any excuses for delays or ambiguity surrounding the project. The party urged Chief Minister Sangma to withdraw the NPYF’s statement, halt the use of political fronts to intimidate citizens, and provide a clear update on the project’s status.

“A government that resorts to silencing its own citizens has lost its moral authority to govern,” the TMC stated, emphasising the need for openness and accountability in Meghalaya’s administration.
