Meghalaya: VPP Threatens to Resume Protests Over Delay in Releasing State Reservation Policy Report

Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit issued a stern warning on Thursday, stating that the party will relaunch street protests if the Meghalaya government fails to immediately publish the report of the Expert Committee on the 1972 State Reservation Policy.

In a direct message to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Basaiawmoit pointed out that more than six months have passed since the committee handed over its findings in June 2025, but the report remains under wraps.

He criticised the government for its apparent unwillingness to make the document public despite persistent demands from the VPP.

The VPP leader emphasised that agitation would resume unless the report is disclosed without any further procrastination.

Chief Minister Sangma has recently maintained that the report will only be released after it receives Cabinet approval, though he has not indicated any concrete timeframe for this process.

The Expert Committee, headed by retired Justice Mool Chand Garg, was constituted in September 2023 to examine the longstanding reservation policy following pressure from multiple groups, including extended protests spearheaded by the VPP.

Although the committee completed and submitted its recommendations in June this year, the continued non-disclosure has raised serious questions about the government's commitment to transparency.
