Aizawl: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially reprimanded Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by announcing new development projects during the election period.

The violation occurred on October 20 during a campaign event in Reiek, where Lalduhoma unveiled plans for a major water supply project to channel water from the Tlawng River to 14 localities in Aizawl. The ECI ruled that such declarations—made while the MCC was in force—breached guidelines prohibiting announcements of new schemes that could influence voters.

After examining the Chief Minister’s written response, the Commission found it unsatisfactory and upheld the charge of undermining electoral fairness.

In its directive, the ECI has instructed the District Election Officer, Mamit, to issue a formal notice to the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) regarding the infraction.

It also ordered the ZPM President to enforce strict compliance with MCC norms among all star campaigners.

The ECI also cautioned ZPM campaigners against making voter-swaying promises or remarks that could disturb communal harmony.

The action stems from a complaint filed on October 24 by Zothansangi Hmar, a lawyer with the MNF Legal Board, who flagged the CM’s statements as a clear breach of election rules.

With polls approaching, the Commission reiterated that safeguarding the integrity of the democratic process remains non-negotiable.
