Delhi Court Grants 10-Day Interim Bail to Sharjeel Imam to Attend Brother’s Wedding

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday granted interim bail to activist Sharjeel Imam, who has been in jail for his alleged involvement in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, allowing him to attend his brother’s wedding.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai at Karkardooma Courts approved the relief, permitting Imam to be out on interim bail for a period of 10 days, from March 20 to March 30, 2026.

Imam, who emerged as a prominent student activist during the 2019–2020 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), has been in custody for several years.

He is among the several key accused in the high-profile case, where the Delhi Police allege that a group of individuals orchestrated a “larger conspiracy” that culminated in the deadly communal riots in North-East Delhi in late February 2020.

The accused in the case face charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) as well as various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The list of those named in the larger conspiracy FIR includes Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan and several other activists.

Some of them were given bail, while some remain in judicial custody.

The court’s decision comes amid ongoing legal proceedings in multiple related cases stemming from the CAA-NRC protests and the subsequent violence that claimed over 50 lives and injured hundreds in the national capital.
