The victims, aged 17 and 15, were residents of Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, respectively. They were discovered around 5:00 am after fellow hostellers raised an alarm when the two failed to attend the routine morning training session.

According to police, repeated knocking on the locked door went unanswered, prompting hostel staff to force the door open. Inside, both girls were found hanging.

The 15-year-old kabaddi player, a Class 10 student, normally stayed in a separate room but had spent the previous night (Wednesday) in the 17-year-old’s room. The older girl, an athletics trainee and Class 12 student, was the regular occupant of the room.

Police said that other inmates had seen the two girls early in the morning before the discovery. No suicide note was recovered from the room, and the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain under investigation.

The police, following the incident, have launched a probe, including examination of CCTV footage, questioning of hostel mates and staff, and collection of forensic evidence.

Preliminary reports indicate the deaths appear to be suicides, but the motive is yet to be ascertained. Police are also looking into a possible angle of foul play.
