“No Sincerity, Only Division”: Gaurav Gogoi Tears Into Himanta Govt Over ST Status for 6 Communities

In a blistering attack on the Himanta Biswa Sarma–led government, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of the Opposition Gaurav Gogoi on Monday alleged that the state government has shown “zero sincerity” in granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six communities of Assam.

Speaking from Delhi ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of deliberately pushing a divisive agenda through the ministerial sub-committee’s report on the ST issue.

“This report reflects nothing but divisive politics. The government has no intention of granting genuine ST benefits to the six communities,” Gogoi said.

“CM wants to hand over tribal land to corporate groups”

Gogoi alleged that instead of resolving the long-pending demand, the Chief Minister is preparing the ground to undermine tribal rights.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma has no goodwill on this matter. He only wants to divide communities and hand over tribal land to Adani and Ambani,” he said.

The Congress leader reminded that existing tribal communities too were not opposed to granting ST benefits to the six communities, provided their own rights were protected.

“Yet the government chose secrecy, avoided consensus and quietly tabled the report on the last day of the Assembly session,” he added.

“CM thinks he knows everything — but people can now see the truth”

Reacting to the Chief Minister’s remark that the Congress should submit its proposal in writing, Gogoi fired back:

“Let him first form an all-party committee. Let him hold an all-party meeting. But he won’t—because he believes he is the smartest. The public has realised he is not as knowledgeable as he pretends.”

Gogoi also claimed that the list of bills circulated for the Winter Session includes no legislation related to ST status for the six communities — a clear sign, he said, that the BJP government does not intend to deliver on its promise.

Zubeen Garg Murder: “CM trying to save Shyamkanu Mahanta”

On the ongoing investigation into the alleged murder of singer Zubeen Garg, Gogoi issued another explosive allegation.

Reacting to Chief Minister Sarma’s statement that “only one person is the murderer,” Gogoi said:

“If he knows the killer, he should name the person. Why is he hiding it? The Chief Minister is trying to protect Shyamkanu Mahanta.”

He added that under such political interference, there is growing concern over whether the beloved singer will receive true justice.
