New Delhi: Speculation is rife that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma could soon relinquish his role as convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emerging as a potential replacement.

The development comes as several regional parties in the Northeast express growing dissatisfaction with NEDA's current standing, prompting some to explore forming a new platform.

Amid this unrest, discussions on a leadership change at NEDA have gained momentum.

A special press conference is scheduled for today at the Deputy Speaker's office in Delhi, where the name of the alliance's new convenor is expected to be announced, according to the latest reports.

Attendees will include Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, Tipra Motha leader Pradyut Bikram Manikya, along with Daniel Langthasa and Mmhonlumo Kikon.

The briefing, set to follow the conference, is anticipated to clarify the alliance's future direction and address concerns from regional outfits that have begun preparations for an alternative coalition.
