The incident took place on Tuesday night when a group of men allegedly broke into Jamatia’s house, ransacked the premises, and dragged him out of his room.

According to statements from his wife and granddaughter, the victim managed to flee briefly but was chased down, tied up, and repeatedly struck with bamboo sticks and iron rods in the courtyard.

Family members rushed the seriously injured man to a nearby health facility and later to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Police recovered blood-stained iron rods and bamboo sticks from the crime scene and have registered a murder case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Killa police station. No arrests have been made so far.

Authorities have not ruled out witchcraft accusations as the motive, noting that Tripura has witnessed several similar mob attacks in recent months linked to superstitious beliefs, alongside incidents stemming from road accidents and theft suspicions.

The killing has once again highlighted the persistence of superstition-related violence in parts of the state, prompting renewed calls for awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement against such crimes. Investigation is ongoing.
