‘King of Dispur Must Be Taught a Lesson’: Gaurav Gogoi Launches Fiercest Attack Yet on Assam CM

Addressing massive gatherings in Dhubri and Goalpara, Gogoi declared that the upcoming election would be a “real battle” — one that he believes the Congress is fully prepared to win.

In one of his sharpest attacks so far, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday portrayed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a “king” ruling Assam with arrogance, fear and corporate loyalty.

Addressing massive gatherings in Dhubri and Goalpara, Gogoi declared that the upcoming election would be a “real battle” — one that he believes the Congress is fully prepared to win.

Gogoi accused CM Sarma of treating public land as personal property, claiming the Chief Minister was attempting to hand over 40,000 bighas of land to Adani and Ambani, while buying tea estates and opening private schools at will. “For all this, poor people can be evicted,” he alleged. “But this time, we will teach these kings a lesson. The government is not the property of a king — it must belong to the poor.”

The APCC chief also took a dig at the Chief Minister’s repeated references to “the 10th,” saying, “Understanding the people’s resentment, that king started talking about the 10th. We too responded that for your 10th, we will show our own 10th. What happened then? His 10th of September fizzled out. But we held joining ceremonies on 10 September, 10 October and 10 November — and thousands of people have left the BJP to join the Congress.”

Gogoi slammed the BJP government for allegedly shutting down government schools in villages while issuing licences for liquor shops. Speaking directly to women in the audience, he promised: “When the Congress returns to power, village liquor shops will be shut down and government schools will be reopened.”

The Congress leader further accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of weakening autonomous councils by keeping them under his “remote control.” In contrast, he recalled that during Tarun Gogoi's tenure, communities such as Bodo, Rabha, Garo, Koch-Rajbongshi and religious minorities in the Goalpara–Dhubri belt received equal affection and support from the Chief Minister. “But today,” he said, “instead of showing affection to the common people, the current CM spreads fear and intimidation — except towards a select few.”

Calling CM Sarma an “anti-tribal Chief Minister,” Gogoi alleged that tribal lands were being targeted for corporate takeovers. He accused the CM of constantly trying to divide Assam — “sometimes in the name of religion, sometimes language, sometimes Upper–Lower Assam, sometimes Barak–Brahmaputra.” Gogoi urged the people to “decisively reject” this politics of hatred.

Tributes to Indira Gandhi Precede Political Fireworks

It is to be noted that the fiery political statements came on a day when the Congress across Assam observed the 108th birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi with solemn respect.

At Rajiv Bhawan in Dhubri, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi offered rich floral tribute to the former Prime Minister, describing her as a patriotic leader under whose stewardship India achieved “a new dimension of progress.” He recalled her strength, vision and transformative role in women’s empowerment.

Similar tributes were paid at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, where party workers gathered to honour the former Prime Minister.

The day also saw the laying of the foundation stone for the new Dhubri District Congress Office building, followed by a massive workers’ convention. In Goalpara, too, a large Congress workers’ meeting was organised.

Gogoi reiterated that the Congress fights not for personal gain but for the rights of the people over their land — a message that seamlessly tied his tribute to Indira Gandhi with his scathing attack on the current BJP-led government.
