No Alliance, No Confusion: Ajmal Sets AIUDF’s Lone-Wolf Path for 2026

Issuing one of his strongest political statements ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday declared that his party will contest the polls alone and will primarily target the BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking to the media, Ajmal launched a sharp attack on multiple political rivals, including the Congress and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, whom he described as an “agent of the BJP”. He added that Congress leaders are “dreaming of Muslim votes” but lack the ability to form a government.

‘Congress cannot form government’

Ajmal said the Congress has “no political calculation” and no longer command electoral confidence, pointing to the party’s defeat in the recently concluded Bihar elections.

“Even if Congress gets the entire 35% Muslim vote, they still cannot win. They simply don’t have the numbers,” Ajmal said, adding that the party seeks friendship with AIUDF but he has no intention of forming an alliance.

Taking direct jabs at Congress leadership in Assam, he said:

• “Gaurav Gogoi knows nothing.”

• “Bhupen Borah knew something, but he is no longer the Congress president.”

AIUDF–AIMIM alliance: Ajmal hints, AIMIM denies

Earlier, Ajmal had hinted at the possibility of an AIUDF alliance with Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM for the 2026 polls.
He had announced that an AIUDF delegation would visit Hyderabad after December 2 to discuss a possible tie-up.

“Owaisi bhai has just completed the Bihar polls and is resting. We will sit together soon, and whatever is decided will be shared with the media,” Ajmal had said, while congratulating AIMIM for its performance in Bihar.

However, AIMIM on Wednesday dismissed reports of its entry into Assam or any alliance talks.
In a post on its official X handle, the party stated:

“These reports are blatantly false. Neither has AIMIM decided to start operations in Assam, nor enter into alliance with any party in the state.”

AIUDF confident of outperforming Congress

Ajmal announced that AIUDF will contest at least 35 seats in the 2026 elections and claimed that his party will win more seats than the Congress.

Political observers say an AIUDF–AIMIM partnership—if it were to materialise—could significantly impact minority-dominated seats in Lower Assam and the Barak Valley. But AIMIM’s official denial has placed the possibility of an alliance in uncertainty.

For now, Ajmal appears set on a solo battle, firing on all political fronts as the state moves closer to an intensely competitive 2026 election.
