Assam: Cachar Court Awards Life Imprisonment to Man for Murder of Wife

The District and Sessions Judge’s Court of Cachar in Assam on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife in a case dating back to 2020.

The convict, identified as Apan Das, a resident of Newbag Bahar under Dholai police station in Cachar district, was found guilty under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The court also imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on the accused.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on June 17, 2020, when an argument broke out between Apan Das and his wife, Kalpana Das, at their residence over a domestic issue. During the altercation, the accused allegedly struck his wife on the head with a wooden object, resulting in her death on the spot.

Following the incident, Apan Das reportedly attempted suicide. However, local residents intervened, apprehended him, and handed him over to the police. The police registered a case and carried out a detailed investigation, later submitting a charge sheet before the court.

After nearly five years of trial and examination of witnesses and evidence, the court held the accused guilty and pronounced the sentence. After the verdict, Apan Das was taken into custody and sent to Silchar Central Jail to serve his life sentence.

The judgment brings closure to a case that had remained under trial for almost five years.
