Assam: Chinmoy Phookan Appointed New GMC Commissioner

Guwahati: In a major bureaucratic overhaul, the Assam government has named senior ACS officer Chinmoy Prakash Phookan as the new Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), effective immediately.

Phookan, who was serving as Joint Secretary in the Transport Department and Managing Director of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), has been transferred to the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs as Joint Secretary while assuming the additional charge of GMC Commissioner.

He will retain his existing portfolios as Managing Director of the Assam Skill Development Mission and Registrar of Assam Skill University until further orders.

The reshuffle sees outgoing GMC Commissioner Dr MS Lakshmi Priya reassigned as Secretary of the Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Department, along with any other duties assigned by the government.

In a related move, Md Hanif Noorani has been relieved of his additional responsibilities as Managing Director of the Assam Skill Development Mission and Registrar of Assam Skill University. Noorani will continue in his primary role as Additional Secretary in the Skill, Employment & Entrepreneurship Department.

The government described the transfers as routine adjustments in the interest of public service.
