Officials report that the blaze erupted while several individuals were inside the commercial building. Emergency services swiftly rescued four people, who were immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for urgent medical attention.

A 32-year-old man, Salman Qureshi, succumbed to smoke inhalation due to the thick, toxic fumes that filled the structure, rather than burns.

The other victims, identified as 24-year-old Tasib, 22-year-old Saharim, and 22-year-old Arif, remain under treatment, with two in extremely critical condition.

Firefighting teams deployed nearly a dozen fire tenders to combat the intense flames.

However, efforts to extinguish the fire have been hampered by heavy smoke and the suspected cause—an electrical short circuit—making containment challenging. As of the latest updates, the fire has not been fully subdued.

Security personnel, including police and paramilitary forces, were dispatched to the scene to control the growing crowds of onlookers and maintain order. As a precautionary step, officials removed a tribute photograph of the late singer Zubeen Garg that had been placed at the site.

Officials are still evaluating the full scope of the damage caused by this tragic incident.
