The Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has charged both individuals under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including murder charges under BNS Section 103.

A case, registered as 18/25, has been filed against Mahanta and Sharma.

Specifically, Mahanta faces charges under seven sections of the BNS: 316(5) (forgery for cheating), 36(3) (causing hurt), 337 (causing hurt by rash or negligent act), 338 (causing grievous hurt by rash or negligent act), 339 (wrongful restraint), 340 (wrongful confinement), 341(1) (cheating), and 342(1) (forgery).

These charges stem from allegations that Mahanta used forged documents for personal financial gain, orchestrating a large-scale economic scam.

During a raid on September 25, 2025, at Mahanta’s residence, the CID seized numerous incriminating documents, including 28 forged seals and stamps.

Among the findings were fake seals in the name of an assistant engineer from the Public Works Department and evidence of two PAN cards linked to Mahanta’s organisation, Trend MMS.

The CID also discovered documents implicating Mahanta in widespread financial irregularities.

In addition to the primary case, the CID, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Asif Ahmed, has filed a separate First Information Report (FIR) against Mahanta for his alleged involvement in fraudulent activities.

The ongoing investigation continues to probe the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death on September 25, 2025, with both accused currently in police custody for further questioning.
