An official notification from the Inspector of Schools, Kamrup (Metropolitan), approved by the District Commissioner, states that these institutions will remain closed from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026.

School heads have been directed to notify students, parents, and staff immediately, ensuring no classes, examinations, or extracurricular activities take place during this period. They are also required to prepare for a seamless restart of academic sessions upon reopening.

Any further updates will be issued as needed, the advisory added.

Private educational institutions in the area have been recommended to independently assess the situation and decide on operations, with student safety as the primary consideration.

The decision comes as Guwahati experiences persistent chilly weather, dense fog, and dropping temperatures, with recent recordings showing a minimum of around 14°C and expectations of further dips into the new year. The ongoing cold spell has raised concerns over student health, particularly during early morning commutes.
