Assam: Missing College Girl’s Body Found in Septic Tank in Jorhat; 63-Year-Old Man Confesses to Rape & Murder

Jorhat: The decomposed body of a missing college student was recovered from a septic tank behind a local store at Titabor in Jorhat, Assam, on Monday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Biplabi Das, a student of Nandnath Saikia College.

Biplabi had been missing since November 7 while returning home from college. Her family had lodged a missing person’s complaint at Titabor Police Station, but locals allege the police failed to act promptly.

The breakthrough came after police detained Jagat Singh (63), the owner of the store where the septic tank is located. During interrogation, Singh confessed to raping and murdering the girl before dumping her body in the tank to destroy evidence.

“He admitted to the crime. We recovered the body based on his disclosure,” a senior police officer confirmed.

Furious residents blocked the Titabor Police Station, accusing police of negligence.

“We filed the complaint on November 7, but nothing was done. If police had acted in time, she might have been saved,” said a resident.

Protestors further demanded the death penalty for the accused, and even some went further with a demand of "encounter killing".

Along with this, locals call for the immediate transfer of the case to a Fast-Track Court.

Police said that the body has been sent for a post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death and confirm sexual assault.

Jagat Singh is currently in police custody, and charges under murder, rape, and evidence tampering are being framed, sources said.
