Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday strongly criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that he is not intimidated by what he described as the Chief Minister’s repeated threats and aggressive rhetoric.

Addressing the media in his home constituency of Jorhat, Gogoi said the Chief Minister’s statements no longer carry weight among the people.

“I do not care about the Chief Minister’s threats. He may continue issuing them, but the people have stopped paying attention to what he says,” Gogoi remarked.

Taking a swipe at Sarma’s recent remarks, the Congress leader said the public reacts to the Chief Minister’s “unnecessary and threatening statements” using words popularised by singer Zubeen Garg, in a clear reference to public frustration. Gogoi further alleged that the Chief Minister’s “politics of intimidation” is unsustainable and nearing its end.

Claiming that Sarma has limited time left in power, Gogoi said,

“He can do whatever he wants in the next four months. After that, when he loses power, he will have to live among the people.”

The APCC president also commented on the charge sheet filed in the Zubeen Garg case. Citing observations made by senior and experienced lawyers in Assam, Gogoi described the charge sheet as “weak and inadequate.”

He alleged that the document was prepared to protect individuals close to the Chief Minister.

“This charge sheet appears to be a deliberate attempt to give relief to the Chief Minister’s close associate Shyamkanu Mahanta. Names of several main accused, who should have been included, are missing,” Gogoi claimed.

Gogoi said that such developments have deepened public scepticism over whether justice will ultimately be delivered in the case, adding that doubts among the people of Assam remain unresolved.
