Constructed at an estimated cost of around ₹3,000 crore, the six-lane bridge stretches approximately 1.24 kilometres and links Guwahati with North Guwahati. The new crossing is expected to cut travel time between the two banks of the river from nearly an hour to just a few minutes, offering substantial relief to commuters and easing congestion on existing routes.

The bridge is named after Kumar Bhaskar Varma, the 7th-century ruler of the ancient Kamrupa kingdom, reflecting Assam’s historical legacy. Beyond its cultural significance, the structure stands out for its engineering design. It is the first extradosed prestressed concrete bridge in the Northeast, a modern construction method that enhances strength and durability over wide river spans.

Given the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes, the project incorporates advanced seismic protection features. These include specialised bearings designed to absorb and dissipate seismic energy, improving the bridge’s stability during tremors. A bridge health monitoring system has also been installed to provide real-time data on structural performance, allowing authorities to track safety and maintenance needs efficiently.

Officials believe the new bridge will not only reduce pressure on the ageing Saraighat Bridge but also support Guwahati’s expanding urban footprint. With educational institutions, residential areas, and commercial hubs growing on both sides of the river, improved connectivity is expected to spur economic activity and regional development.

The inauguration ceremony drew large crowds, underlining the project’s importance for the state. The bridge is seen as a key addition to the Centre’s push to strengthen infrastructure across the Northeast and improve integration with the rest of the country.
