Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday raised serious questions over the alleged “mastermind” behind the murder of singer Zubeen Garg, claiming that the person who orchestrated the killing is yet to be identified publicly.

His remarks came a day after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a statement on the case in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Speaking to media at Biswanath Chariali, Gogoi said,

“The names of those involved were mentioned in the Assembly, but who directed them? The real mastermind is still unknown. The people of Assam’s villages do not believe Zubeen Garg will get justice.” Gogoi alleged that the Chief Minister is deliberately using various strategies to mislead the public on the matter.

Responding to questions about a purported “Pakistan link” to the case, Gogoi said the Chief Minister has “completely failed”.

“On September 10, he called journalists and claimed he would release the SIT report. At that time, Zubeen Garg was still alive. But the Chief Minister could not fulfil his promise. Even his own party members feel embarrassed by his confusing statements. Delhi’s leadership laughs at his comments, and even journalists find humour in them,” Gogoi stated.

The APCC chief further alleged that the Election Commission has been favouring the BJP by facilitating electoral manipulation, including voter fraud. Gogoi said the Congress has strengthened its Booth Level Agents (BLAs) and booth committees to prevent “vote theft”.

Gogoi also accused chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of attempting to include BJP supporters from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh into Assam’s voter rolls to secure victory in the upcoming Assembly elections.

“The Chief Minister is terrified because people across Assam—villages, towns, youth, and mothers—are rising against his misrule. To safeguard his chair, he is trying to bring outsiders into the voter list. But Assam’s politics will remain in the hands of the people of Assam,” he asserted.

Appealing for vigilance, Gogoi urged opposition parties and the general public to ensure that “RSS workers from UP–Bihar” do not get illegally added to Assam’s voter list.

Meanwhile, speaking at the district booth committee meeting in Biswanath Chariali, former APCC president Ripun Bora accused the BJP of failing to bring significant development to Assam during its 10 years in power.

“The BJP now has no issues, so it is desperately trying to create Hindu–Muslim divisions,” he said.

Former president Bhupen Borah emphasised that the cultural and social unity of Assam—built from the era of Ahom king Sukaphaa through Srimanta Sankardeva to cultural icons like Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg—cannot be broken by the BJP.

“The BJP has tried to divide Assam at every level, including during Zubeen Garg’s final moments when people gathered in grief. But the people of Assam will never allow such divisive politics to succeed,” Borah said.
