Zubeen Garg’s First Birthday in Absence: Assam Celebrates the Heartthrob’s 53rd Birthday with Tears and Tributes

Guwahati: Today, November 18, 2025, marks the first birthday of Assam’s beloved singer, composer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg without his physical presence. The “Heartthrob of Assam” would have turned 53 today, but fate had other plans.

Though it is still hard to believe that Zubeen is no more, fans across the state have accepted the harsh reality and are observing their eternal superstar’s birthday with heavy hearts. From morning till late night, people are remembering Zubeen through his magical songs that once filled the air of Assam.

Throughout the day, numerous programmes, tributes and remembrance events are being held in different parts of the state. Fans are staying awake through the “mayabini raati” (magical nights) he immortalised in his songs, shedding tears while cherishing the precious memories stored in their hearts.

In previous years, the night before his birthday used to witness hundreds of fans gathering outside Zubeen Garg’s residence in Guwahati. Holding cakes in their hands, they would wait patiently in front of his gate. At the stroke of midnight, Zubeen would step out with his trademark smile, cut the first cake himself, take the first bite, and then celebrate with his sea of admirers.

That midnight cake-cutting, that warmth, that laughter – none of it is possible this year. Zubeen is no more.

Yet, can the fans of the Heartthrob let this day pass without celebration? No. Today, the celebration continues – not with joy, but with love, gratitude and tears, because Zubeen Garg lives forever in every Assamese heart and in every note of his timeless melodies.

Fans and admirers have started to throng to Zubeen Garg's final resting place in Sonapur to pray for his departed soul.
