The accused, identified as Dipjyoti Das of Sorpara village under the Palashbari constituency, had allegedly been impersonating an official of the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) for nearly two years. Police sources said he frequently moved around brandishing a pistol to intimidate people, creating an atmosphere of fear.

Das was caught while patrolling the VIP zone in a white Fortuner SUV (registration AS 01 BS 9533), fitted with a fake government designation plate and a siren. Acting on a tip-off, Azara Police conducted a surprise operation, during which Das attempted to flee. He was immediately overpowered and detained.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of several fake documents, including forged identity papers. While the pistol used by him was initially missing, police sources later confirmed that the weapon has been recovered.

Investigators revealed that Das had been living for the past few years near the VIP airport zone as a tenant with his wife and daughter, using his fake identity to establish influence and run illegal operations. He is also accused of claiming to have obtained a fraudulent doctorate degree from South Bank University, London in January 2022.

Das is no stranger to the law; in 2010 he was named in a case filed at Palashbari Police Station based on a complaint by then Vijay Nagar Police Outpost in-charge Mahendra Mohan Baruatiya.

Police suspect that he was part of a larger criminal network involved in fraud and illegal activities. Azara Police have launched extensive follow-up raids to track his associates and uncover the full extent of his operations.

Officials said that once the ongoing investigation and raids are completed, detailed information will be formally released. Police believe the arrest could help dismantle a well-established criminal syndicate operating under the guise of high-level government authority.
