Manipur: Extortion and Arms Racket Near Myanmar Border Busted

The Anti-Extortion Unit of Manipur Police, working alongside central security forces, apprehended a prominent figure linked to an organised crime syndicate involved in extortion and illegal arms smuggling along the state's sensitive border areas.

A police statement detailed the success of a collaborative raid on October 13, 2025, in the L Minou-Koijam region of Tengnoupal district, close to the Myanmar frontier.

Investigators suspect the arrested individual is connected to a notorious gang currently facing probes for multiple offences.

Guided by precise intelligence, the security personnel executed a dawn cordon-and-search mission, leading to the capture of 48-year-old Leishangthem Surchandra Singh from Sagolband Tera Sapam Leirak in Imphal West district.

The raid yielded key items: two smartphones believed to hold electronic records of the extortion scheme, a Maruti Gypsy vehicle, and a ledger purportedly recording proceeds from extortion demands and weapons trafficking.

Law enforcement officials anticipate these findings will play a pivotal role in unravelling the extensive underworld network exploiting the vulnerable India-Myanmar border.

The suspect was transferred to Tengnoupal Police Station for thorough questioning and legal action under applicable statutes.
