He claimed that the capital’s growing gridlock requires a comprehensive, long-term plan rather than temporary measures.

Speaking on the persistent traffic challenges facing the city, Pyngrope described the situation as a deep-rooted structural issue that calls for coordinated action from all stakeholders, including government departments, legislators, and citizens.

“Every stakeholder is aware of this pressing problem we are currently facing,” he said. “Honourable members have already put forward several suggestions, and I am confident these will be carefully examined. What is needed now is a clear, actionable plan to alleviate the traffic congestion in the state.”

He added that simply recognising the severity of the problem is insufficient, but concrete and practical steps must also be followed.

He urged officials related to the matter to study successful models from both Indian and international cities that have effectively managed similar urban mobility challenges.

“We cannot simply rest on the fact that everyone acknowledges the issue. The real question is: how do we solve it?” Pyngrope added.

He further said, “We should draw inspiration from cities, whether in India or abroad, that have implemented workable solutions.”

While acknowledging that Shillong’s hilly topography presents genuine difficulties for large-scale infrastructure projects, he rejected the idea that terrain should be used as a justification for inaction.

“One of the biggest contributors to congestion is the absence of a reliable and efficient public transport network,” he said. “The geography certainly makes implementation more challenging, but that does not mean solutions are impossible. All concerned parties must collaborate to find and execute the right approach.”
