Arson Attack Disrupts Republic Day in Manipur, Triggers Fresh Displacement

The incident reportedly took place around midday, when several houses were torched, forcing residents to flee in panic to nearby safer areas. The attack, carried out in broad daylight, heightened anxieties over civilian safety in an area already marked by prolonged unrest.

Videos and photographs widely shared on social media platforms, including X, showed plumes of smoke rising from burning homes as villagers were seen escaping with whatever belongings they could carry. The visuals sparked concern and condemnation, as they emerged on a day meant to mark national unity.

Later in the evening, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) issued a statement claiming responsibility for what it described as an “operation” in parts of the Songnung Sadar Hills under Kangpokpi district. The group asserted that its actions were aimed at dismantling what it alleged were illegal poppy cultivation sites, drug-related activities, and unauthorised encroachments in the Waphong area.

According to the statement, structures such as farmhouses and related installations were destroyed around 12.15 pm, following what the group claimed were repeated public warnings issued earlier. ZUF maintained that sufficient time had been given for voluntary compliance before the action was undertaken.

The outfit further stated that it would not tolerate what it described as unlawful occupation or activities on land it considers ancestral to the Zeliangrong Inpui Naga community. Reiterating its opposition to narcotics-linked operations, the group said it would continue to act against activities it views as threatening the region.

Meanwhile, the incident has once again drawn attention to the fragile security situation in Manipur, particularly in the hill districts, where violence and displacement have persisted over the past months. Official responses from the state administration and security agencies were awaited at the time of filing this report.
