The operation was carried out on Thursday following specific intelligence inputs about a large consignment of narcotics being smuggled into the Lakhipur area of Cachar district. Acting on the tip-off, a joint team intercepted the suspect near Tolengram village after he reportedly navigated through the Barak River to enter the district.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the security forces for the successful operation. In a post on social media platform X, he described the seizure as a “big blow to drug peddlers” and commended Cachar Police and the Assam Rifles for their coordinated action at Tolengram.

Cachar’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Subrata Kumar Sen, said the accused was caught red-handed during the operation. The individual has been identified as Javien Bhaipe, a resident of Manipur’s Jiribam district.

Addressing a press conference, Sen described the seizure as a significant breakthrough in the district’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking. He said police had received credible information about the movement of a large cache of narcotics via the river route into Lakhipur, prompting immediate action.

During the search, the team recovered 154 soap cases of heroin weighing approximately 1.88 kilograms along with 10,000 Yaba tablets from the accused. The seized heroin is estimated to have an illicit market value of around Rs 14 crore.

Police believe the consignment was meant to be transported further to other states for distribution. A case has been registered against the accused, and a detailed investigation is underway to identify other links in the trafficking network.
