The event, held in Guwahati, marks a major step in expanding access to premier management education in Assam. The new institute becomes the 22nd IIM in the country and the second in the region after the Indian Institute of Management Shillong.

Operating initially from a temporary campus, the institute is expected to admit students while work progresses on its permanent site. The government has positioned the new IIM as a catalyst for nurturing managerial talent, entrepreneurship, and research in the Northeast, reducing the need for students to migrate to other parts of India for top-tier business education.

Alongside the academic milestone, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the data centre at Amingaon in the Kamrup district. The facility is designed to strengthen digital governance by hosting critical state and central government applications. Equipped with advanced infrastructure and secure systems, it will also function as a disaster recovery hub to ensure continuity of public services.

Officials said the twin launches reflect a broader strategy to combine educational development with digital transformation. By establishing a new management institute and bolstering IT infrastructure, the government aims to enhance opportunities for youth while modernising administrative systems across the region.

The projects underline an ongoing push to integrate the Northeast more closely into India’s national growth framework through investments in knowledge and technology.
