"Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu stated that the state government and Zubeen Garg's family have decided to conduct the cremation and last rites of the beloved singer in Guwahati or its suburbs.Advertisment The decision came after discussing the family's preference amid demands from Jorhat residents for the ceremony to take place in the late artist's formative hometown. The decision, finalised after consultations with Garg's wife, Garima Saikia Garg and family members at Sarusajai Stadium, prioritises practicality and ensures a timely farewell for the cultural icon. Addressing reporters, Pegu stated that discussions with the family were held keeping the Jorhat demand in mind, but Garima emphasised the challenges of travelling over 300 km. "Zubeen's father is old, and the location would be quite far if taken to Jorhat," Pegu quoted Garima as saying. The family, now residing in Guwahati, believes the samadhi should be established in and around the city to accommodate elderly relatives and facilitate public participation. "We also told them about the various land options for the samadhi," Pegu added. With respect to Jorhat's residents and people, Garima focused on Guwahati to ensure everything happens in time. The government has assured that it would streamline all arrangements, including security and logistics, for a dignified state funeral. The proposed Sonapur area, on Guwahati's outskirts along the Brahmaputra, emerged as a frontrunner after deliberations, though other options are under review. However, Pegu clarified that the final resting ground will be in Guwahati, with the exact place to be finalised after another meeting of the state cabinet this evening. Zubeen Garg, aged 52, passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore. His mortal remains arrived in Guwahati this morning, drawing thousands to Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium, kept open overnight by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's directive, and set for further public homage tomorrow. The three-day state mourning period ends tomorrow, with fans across Assam continuing to light candles."
