Zubeen Garg's Mortal Remains Arrive at Kahilipara Residence

The mortal remains of Assam's beloved singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg reached his family home in Kahilipara this afternoon, drawing an overwhelming outpouring of sorrow from thousands of fans and admirers.

The procession, which began at Guwahati airport earlier today after the arrival of Garg's body from Delhi, proceeded at a measured pace through the city, accompanied by a massive crowd of grieving supporters. Many walked alongside the vehicle bearing the coffin, holding flowers, placards, and portraits of the late artist, while chanting his name and offering prayers in his memory.

Zubeen Garg, aged 52, tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore due to complications from a swimming accident during a sea outing at Lazarus Island. He was in the city for the North East Festival, where he was slated to perform as the cultural brand ambassador. Despite being rushed to Singapore General Hospital and placed under intensive care, he succumbed around 2:40 p.m. local time, reports claimed.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who personally received the body in Delhi before accompanying it to Guwahati, described the loss as "tragic beyond words," stating that the state had "lost one of its favourite sons." In a tribute, he praised Garg's voice for its unmatched ability to energise people and his music for speaking directly to minds and souls. The state government has declared three days of mourning from September 20 to 22, suspending all official entertainment, dinners, and ceremonial functions during this period.

From the Kahilipara residence, where Garg's wife, Garima Saikia Garg and family await to pay their final respects, the remains will later be transported to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai. There, fans will have the opportunity to bid a dignified farewell to the musical legend whose three-decade career as a singer, songwriter, actor, and filmmaker touched millions across Assam, the Northeast, and beyond.

Condolences have poured in from across the nation, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who remembered Garg for his rich contributions to music and expressed solidarity with his family and admirers. Multiple FIRs have been filed against event organisers, with the Assam Police transferring the case to the CID for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
