A Meghalaya Tourism Department official revealed that the project, valued at over Rs 300 crore, is financed through the PM-DevINE scheme—a Central sector initiative introduced in the 2022-23 Union Budget to fast-track progress across the eight Northeastern states.

The official explained that the endeavour aims to bolster tourism facilities, foster sustainable livelihoods, and safeguard Sohra's distinctive cultural and natural legacy. "It will improve amenities for visitors, encourage environmentally responsible tourism, and generate job opportunities for locals, ensuring that tourism expansion delivers broad-based and enduring benefits," the official stated.

The ceremony was jointly hosted by the Meghalaya Tourism Department and the Ministry of DoNER. The official said that the project underscores the Central government's ongoing dedication to harnessing the tourism and economic potential of the Northeast.

During the event, the leaders toured exhibits featuring local handicrafts and businesses, engaging with entrepreneurs, craftsmen, and tourism operators to highlight the emphasis on community-driven growth.

Nestled in the East Khasi Hills district, Sohra (Cherrapunji)—approximately 54 km from Shillong—is renowned as one of the planet's rainiest spots. The area boasts the remarkable double-decker and single-decker living root bridges, mystical structures enveloped in fog and legend. Prior to the event, the DoNER Minister hiked to a prominent living root bridge in the East Khasi Hills.

On his official X account, Scindia shared: “A two-hour-long hike through Rangthylliang, the world’s longest living root bridge spanning over 50m, felt like being cradled by Mother Nature herself. There was something deeply grounding about walking on roots that have grown strong over centuries. It reminded me that just as she gives us a firm footing, it’s on us to protect her in return and to nurture what nurtures us. A quiet moment, a lasting lesson. I bow my head in reverence to Mother Nature’s eternal grace and wisdom.”

Meghalaya's living root bridges represent a fascinating tradition rooted in Khasi heritage, originating from eras when navigating thick jungles and swift streams was routine.
