Assam: Eight arrested in mob lynching case over Zubeen Garg's song dispute during Durga Puja

The Chandmari Police in Guwahati, Assam, apprehended eight individuals linked to the alleged murder of Abhinash Rajak, which occurred late on October 2 near the Bamunimaidam railway colony during a Durga Puja celebration.

The suspects, identified as Raju Dutta, Gopal Das, Basant Basfor, Bishal Chakraborty, Biju Sil, Ramen Dakua, Subhendra Sekhar Roy, and Baran Chakraborty, are all members of the Kalibari Durga Puja Committee in Bamunimaidam.

According to police reports, the suspects were present at the crime scene, where they allegedly provoked others to attack the victim and later attempted to tamper with evidence.

Reports also suggested that the group was intoxicated during the assault, which was triggered by a disagreement over playing songs by Zubeen Garg.

Rajak, who had set up a temporary shop near the Kalibari Durga Puja pandal for the festival, was attacked while heading home, reports stated.

Chandmari police have classified the incident as a mob lynching case, officials said.

Approximately ten other suspects, including the primary accused, still remain at large.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Amitabh Basumatary stated that no eyewitnesses have come forward to provide statements regarding the incident.

Reports earlier stated that Rajak was "lynched" by at least 25 individuals, and he died before any medical assistance could be arranged.
